WRAP of DC 
 
We are a group of trained and Certified Mental Health Recovery Educator/Facilitator's,* living here in the District of Columbia who are qualifed to train and assist individuals and/or groups in how to develop and use a WRAP plan.
 

  


WRAP stands for Wellness Recovery Action Plan™
 
WRAP is a self-management and recovery system developed by a group of people who had mental health difficulties and who were struggling to incorporate wellness tools and strategies into their lives.
 
 
 
WRAP is designed to:

• Decrease and prevent intrusive or troubling feelings and behaviors

• Increase personal empowerment
 
• Improve quality of life

• Assist people in achieving their own life goals and dreams.
 
WRAP is a structured system to monitor uncomfortable and distressing symptoms that can help you reduce, modify or eliminate those symptoms by using planned responses. This includes plans for how you want others to respond when symptoms have made it impossible for you to continue to make decisions, take care of yourself or keep yourself safe.
 
People who are using WRAP say:

• “It helps me feel prepared.”

• “I feel better more often and I’m able to improve the overall quality of my life.”

The person who experiences symptoms is the one who develops their personal WRAP. The person may choose to have supporters and health care professionals help them create their WRAP.
 
The WRAP system was developed by people who have been dealing with a variety of psychiatric symptoms for many years and who are working hard to feel better and get on with their lives. Mary Ellen Copeland has shared it with people with other illnesses and they too believe that it can be easily adapted for use with other conditions
 
This course is designed to help you learn:

• mental health recovery concepts and skills
• how to develop a Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP)

The course includes lessons with reading assignments, projects, activities, and discussion with the instructor. Successful completion is based on the instructor's assessment of the participant’s ability to understand and use the concepts, skills, and techniques described in the course texts. The course instructor is an experienced recovery educator.

You can expect to spend four to five hours per week for four weeks reading and completing assignments. You can complete the course at your own pace. In areas where several people are taking the correspondence course, participants have met together, usually once a week. They discuss and work on the assignments together. We encourage you to consider this option.
 
  

Washington, DC Wrap Facilitators want you to know the different parts of a Wellness Recovery Action Plan includes:
 
  • WELLNESS TOOL BOX

Inside of your wellness tool box are those tools you may want to use to help keep you feeling well, safe and healthy. Remember to sharpen your tools through hope, personal responsibility, education, self-advocay and support as often as you need to.

  • DAILY MAINTENANCE PLAN

A Daily Maintenance plan has two (2) parts and includes a section thats called, "what I'm like when I am well". The first part is called Daily To Dos, it includes a list of thing that you will do every day to keep you well, focused and feeling great about yourself and your life. The second part is called, Good To Dos and that includes those good things you may do weekly or even monthly.

  •   TRIGGERS
Triggers are external events or circumstances that may make you feel bad or have negative thoughts. Examples might include, having problems at home or at work, the end of a relationship, financial concerns, physical or mental illness or anyother type of negative feeling. The two parts to your Trigger plan are (1) Action plan for dealing with Triggers, and (2) Options things to do once the Triggers come.

March 2007-Washington, D.C.-In February 2007, the D.C. Department of Mental Health in a partnership with the Mary Ellen Copeland Center located in Vermont teamed up to provide an eight day Certification class for fifteen candidates.
 
The professional training was held in Washington, D.C. at the Galludet University, Kellog Center. The Kellog Conference Center played host to a fabulous eight day training that included all written materials, daily wonderful and nutritiuos breakfasts and lavish lunches.
 
Two talented advanced trainers form the Mary Ellen Copeland center facilitated the training session. Allan McNabb and B.J. North were fantastic trainers, that provided support, incredible information and energy. This training was a great experience for the persons that went through and completed this course.
 
At thi end of the eight day training which included a three day introduction and then a five day intensive training, candidates were challenged to work hard and efficient. Some of the challenges included performing a five minute introduction, presenting a section of the WRAP and working as a group to create a diversity of projects.
