Is having a WRAP right for you?

Overall Description

The Wellness Recovery Action Program is a structured system for monitoring uncomfortable and distressing symptoms and, through planned responses, reducing, modifying or eliminating those symptoms.

It also includes plans for responses from others when your symptoms have made it impossible for you to continue to make decisions, take care of yourself and keep yourself safe. Anecdotal reporting from people who are using this system indicates that, by helping them to feel prepared, it is working for them by helping them to feel better more often and by improving the overall quality of their life.

The curriculum is specific to Mary Ellen Copeland’s WRAP workshop, Mental Health Recovery Seminar I including Wellness Recovery Action Planning, and is not necessarily a resource to be used in developing other kinds of programs. However, some facilitators are using this Recovery/WRAP focus in curriculum combination with recovery-oriented programs.

The educational curriculum presents an approach which is complementary to, but not a replacement for, other mental health treatment protocols.

We follow the suggested program as closely as possible while adapting activities and formats according to our own best judgment and creative style.

The curriculum contains preparatory work, guidelines, formats, information and resources. It has been developed by Mary Ellen Copeland to be used as a training guide for those learning mental health recovery skills including Wellness Recovery Action Planning to people who experience psychiatric symptoms, their family members and health care providers.

The information can be used to lead small or large groups and to facilitate workshops and seminars.

What is the Cost Benefit of having a Wellness Recovery Action Plan, (WRAP)?

When you think about paying for an item or thing, you may think about the cost. I remember before I had a Wellness Recovery Action Plan, my life and the things I acquired might as well been worthless. The reason I say this is because when I would get sick, my prized possessions would be thrown or given away. I would have to purchase a new bed, furniture, replace my pets, buy new clothes and the likes. In this case the cost could get really expensive. Having a Wellness Recovery Action Plan is priceless. It is an investment that has great returns. The cost associated with having a WRAP is so low, all it cost is your time!
